Four Years Before
There was something wrong with Emily. He could always tell. He wasn’t sure if it was a twin thing or if it was because they were so close. Whenever she was stressed, she had this massive vein on her forehead that seemed to pulsate out of her brain. Adam named him Bob. Today, Bob was giving “fuck off” signals to everyone where they were eating brunch.
Three Weeks Before
She wasn’t sure what prompted her to ask him the question at the time. She didn’t think it was that important either. After she asked, however, her normally playful and sarcastic twin went out of character.
“Why do you climb?”
He couldn’t feel his arms. Looking up the face of the wall was almost enough to make him quit. Looking back the way he came gave him vertigo. It felt like his mind was in overdrive. He could hear the loud song of a bird in the treetops beside him and all he could think was that he wished it would shut up, maybe a pinecone fall on its head, something. Was that too much to ask?
“Tension!” he shouted to Emily. He hoped that she wouldn’t have to keep the break on the belay system for long. He was not going to fall.
